Julia Varela

(Spain, 1986)

Vive y trabaja en Londres // Lives and works in London

Julia has an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London,(2013-2015), and a BFA from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Universidad Europea de Madrid (2004-2008). She has received a number of prizes and grants, most recently: GENERACIONES 2016 Award by La Fundacion MonteMadrid, Spain, The Venice Biennale Trip Grant (The Royal College of Art London) and the CAC Special Projects Award (The Trustees of Chelsea Arts Club Trust). In previous years, she was awarded distinctions by The Royal College of Art (MA Scholarship 2013-2015), The Regional Government of Madrid, Spain (17th Young Art Competition), Centro de Creación Contemporánea MATADERO Madrid (Emerging Young Artist Archive), Fundación Botín, Santander, Spain (Miroslaw Balka Grant/Residency), and the Universidad Europea de Madrid (Emerging Visual Arts Practices Annual Award). In 2014 and 2016 her work was exhibited at La Casa Encendida Madrid (Generaciones 2016 ) and London venues such as HQS Wellington (OFF THE WALL), Camden Arts Centre (Pause Patina), Chelsea Arts Club Trust (From the other side), and the Bosse & Baum (Etat D’Ame), Flat Time House (Residency: Fluorescent), Henry Moore (W.I.P), Dyson, Samia (P.V) and CUL DE SA C Galleries, as well as at Alserkal Avenue (RCA Flux) in Al Quoz, Dubai, and Madrid’s Galería Blanca Soto (Fraud). Other exhibitions included, Espacio Carromato and La Casa Encendida Madrid, (Mil nudos, International Festival of Sound and Interactive Art. IN-SONORA OFF), Casa Velazquez (Megaphones), Fundación Claves del Arte, Centro cultural Galileo Galilei (De la oscuridad viene la luz) and Galería Villa Irís Fundación Botín Santander. She co-organised the following temporary exhibitions and events in London:

 

- Off The Wall (HQS Wellington), Victoria Embankment, London 18/09/2015 The entire exhibition aimed to raise funding to Syrian Projects. In collaboration with Doctors Without Borders (MSF UK).
