Jerónimo Elespe desarrolló su formación y primeros años de carrera artística en Estados Unidos, donde se licenció en la School of Visual Arts de Nueva York y completó después el máster de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Yale. Tras doce años en Nueva York, en 2008 se instaló de nuevo en Madrid, donde actualmente vive y trabaja.

La obra de Elespe se reconoce por los pequeños formatos que utiliza. Estos reducidos óleos, pintados sobre paneles de aluminio, evocan tanto la pintura clásica (Velázquez, Antonello de Messina) como diferentes ramas del modernismo y la pintura contemporánea, en un continuo intercambio de lenguajes y referencias. En ellos representa escenas autobiográficas, paisajes, interiores, retratos y escenas nocturnas abstractas, pintados de la memoria y la imaginación. Lo escueto de estos formatos sobre soporte de metal sirven al artista para resaltar su carácter de pequeños objetos físicos en contraste con la frecuente inmaterialidad de las imágenes.

Todas sus obras tienen un punto de partida autobiográfico centrado en lo doméstico y en la vida del artista en el estudio. Según avanza el lento proceso de trabajo en el taller (en ocasiones durante meses o incluso años), dichos motivos autobiográficos van adquiriendo su propia lógica pictórica al tiempo que se introducen elementos de ficción, de modo que los personajes retratados con más frecuencia por Elespe van configurando una suerte de familia ficticia paralela.

Una reducida paleta cromática de blancos, negros y grises, que se superponen capa a capa en un largo y lento desarrollo, da cuenta de las horas de trabajo nocturno. Resulta cautivador que en una superficie tan pequeña estén ocurriendo tantas cosas.

​Su trabajo se ha expuesto en las galerías Eleven Rivington y John Connelly Presents de Nueva York, la galería Soledad Lorenzo en Madrid o el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC), donde en 2012 presentó su primera muestra individual en un museo.

Jerónimo Elespe trained and started his career as an artist in the United States, where he graduated from the New York School of Visual Arts and completed an MFA from Yale University. After twelve years in New York, in 2008 he went back to Madrid, Spain, where he currently lives and works.

Elespe’s work is characterised by the recognisable small formats he employs—reduced oils on aluminium panels that evoke classic painting (from Velázquez to Antonello de Messina) as well as some branches of modernist and contemporary painting through a constant intermingling of languages and references. Resorting to both memories and imagination the artist represents autobiographical scenes, landscapes, interiors, portraits and abstract nighttime scenes. These small formats on metal supports help the artist build a contrast between its physicality as reduced-sized objects and the immateriality that often haunts the images.

All of Elespe’s works start from an autobiographical experience that revolves around domesticity and the artist’s day-to-day in the studio. As the slow creative process progresses (sometimes taking months, or even years), these autobiographical motives gradually acquire their own intrinsic pictorial logic. At the same time, fictional elements are also introduced and, as a result, the characters more frequently depicted by the artist begin to form a sort of fictitious parallel family.

The reduced palette of whites, black and greys builds a set of slowly developed, overlapping layers that account for the long hours of night work. The fact that so many things take place in such a tiny surface is simply captivating.

Elespe’s work has been exhibited, among others, in New York galleries Eleven Rivi ngton and John Connelly Presents, Soledad Lorenzo gallery in Madrid and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC) in Málaga, Spain, where he had his first solo exhibition in a museum in 2012.
